I’m glad you are enjoying autumn at a slower pace this year. It’s so easy to get caught in the “must share, must do” mindset. Usually by now I would have gone to pick apples from a local farm but I’m allowing some traditions to fizzle out this year as my body needs rest. If it doesn’t happen this year, it’s okay. I love the Gaelic words you share too. Have a lovely holiday, dear!
Thank you, Caitlin. I can't believe I've been home a week now...it felt lovely to decompress by the sea. I'm glad you feel able to let go of a few 'to dos' in order to rest <3
I struggle with the same inability to slow down every autumn! I like to think that something in the cool air must spark an ancestral urge to be busy, busy, busy to prepare myself for winter. I'm also trying to slow down and enjoy spontaneous peaceful moments instead trying to plan everything out. If I don't get to read all the autumn books on my tbr or bake all the autumn dishes or finish sewing all my winter dresses, that's ok! I want to enjoy what I do manage to do, rather than worrying about everything else as I'm doing it.
"Part of Autumn’s special glow lies in how quickly it fades." - this line is such a beautiful truth. I've been feeling the same way, wanting to be really present in my life and the seasons instead of trying to fulfill a list of 'fun' things that I see other people doing online. It's just another form of comparison isn't it, or fear of missing out? But I feel like so many people I know are shifting away from that age of social media that's held us in a chokehold for so long. I'm hearing more and more discussions of wanting to slow down and connect inward, instead of projecting outward.
Your writing is magical as always, and I so look forward to receiving these letters. Hope you enjoy your time on Skye!
Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Kerani. I've been noticing more conversations about slowing down and a turning away from social media, too. I find the line between inspiration and comparison online can quickly blur for me, and that's when I need to step back and connect to my own creative vision.
I'm so grateful for your comments, and delighted that you're enjoying these letters xx
That line often blurs for me too, I’ve found that it depends on the platform as well. Instagram and TikTok? Lots of comparison struggles. Pinterest though has often been a refuge for me as a source of inspiration where I don’t feel that itch of comparison. I think it’s because it’s more like a search engine, and everything gets lumped together anonymously.
I'm enjoying your meditations on calm. Beautiful piece. But I'm not going to take your warning about blackberries! I looked up this lore a while back, as part of research for my own WIP, and calculated that Michaelmas would be 10th October before the calendar change, giving me a couple more weeks to enjoy them!
Enjoy your journey to Skye, Kate. Autumn is my favorite, too, and I think I'll call mushrooms filth-bubbles from now on. :)
I can't help but call them that now!
That's such a wonderful name for them, isn't it? Except that I think they're actually delicious. The safe ones, of course!

I think you're right about the ancestral urge to prepare for winter! That's amazing that you sew your own winter dresses, by the way.

You're quite right, I hadn't thought about the calendar change. Good to know that next year I'll have a wee bit longer before the devil is abroad!
